The ultimate mark of friendship

Written by Suraj Shah.

compassionate, straightforward, centred, fearless… a true friend.

Friends.
They come, they go.
What makes the ultimate friend?

Compassionate.
Takes me to true happiness.
That is the ultimate friend.

Straightforward.
Points out my faults.
That is the ultimate friend.

Vigilant.
Warns of the obstacles.
That is the ultimate friend.

Forgiving.
Harbours no spite.
That is the ultimate friend.

Affectionate.
Like a mother.
That is the ultimate friend.

Centred.
Rises above the situations.
That is the ultimate friend.

Fearless.
Reminds me of impermanence.
That is the ultimate friend.

Supportive.
In birth, old age, death.
That is the ultimate friend.

Who is looking back at me?

Poem written by Suraj Shah.

… and why do I hold these things so dear?

Looking in the mirror, straight into my own eyes,
Dare I keep looking at myself, caught up in these toxic lies.
Who is looking back at me?  How long will he be here?
Who is he, really, and why is there so much fear?

Here today but gone tomorrow, we all know that,
We are reminded about it time and again, as a matter of fact.
Who is looking back at me?  How long will he be here?
Who is he, really, and when will it become clear?

Immersed in the changing, by what will be no more,
To save my soul, I must learn, to simply shut the door.
Who is looking back at me?  How long will he be here?
Who is he, really, and why do I hold these things so dear?

This body and it’s relationships, though permanent we think,
Is but no more than an illusion, will vanish within a blink!
Who is looking back at me?  How long will he be here?
Who is he, really, and how do I attend to what is near?

The indulgence of the body, the attachment to my and mine,
Releasing control gently, surrendering it to the divine.
Who is looking back at me?  How long will he be here?
“Who is he, really?” is the ultimate question to persevere.

Would you notice?

Poem written by Suraj Shah.

Time to wake up from this slumber,
Time to put my mundane desires to the side…

If I were to go today, would you notice me missing?
If I were to stay today, would you notice me here?
Doing much to keep me happy,
Running far away from fear.

Working hard for temporary pleasures,
Forgetting to focus on the core,
Ignoring the needs of others,
Is it only me that I adore?

Time to wake up from this slumber,
Time to put my mundane desires to the side,
Got to be brave and fight my inner enemies,
Got to no longer choose to hide.

If I were to go today, would you notice me missing?
If I were to stay today, would you notice me here?
Turn my attention now towards my true self,
Turn my attention towards what’s near.

If I were to go today, would you notice me missing?
